Don't worry if it all sounds a little outside your comfort zone, our instructors will guide you through the skills and activities safely and successfully.
Skills & Activities
Day 1
Shelter - Debris or Tarp.
Your day will start by constructing your own shelters, either building a debris shelter from the resources available within the woodland or setting up a tarp shelter. You will be shown both methods of shelter construction and depending on the weather and your personal choice, you will need to decide which sort of shelter you are spending the night in, a debris or tarp.
Once you've built your shelter it will serve as your base camp for all your bushcraft activities.
Knife & Saw
Using a bushcraft knife and saw safely are very important bushcraft skills to master. You'll be shown how to make your own tent pegs, mallet, feather sticks and a pot hanger.
Techniques will include knife and saw safety, passing a blade to others, battoning, stopper cuts and various hand holds for safe cutting.
Lunch
Please bring your own food, snacks and drinks for the day.
Fresh water, tea & coffee will be available throughout the day.
Water - How to find it and make it safe to drink
Without safe drinkable water in the wilderness, you are in big trouble, we will show you how to find it and how to make it safe to drink.
Once you have your water supply our Instructors will demonstrate how to make a bushcraft filter system using what's around us in the woods. You must make a filter system to reduce the sediment and get ready to boil it which makes it safe to drink.
Fire Lighting
Our instructors will show you numerous fire lighting skills. Using Ferro rods to ignite a selection of man made and different natural materials to create fire. Learn how to make a tinder bundle and blow it into flames.
We will show you how to collect your kindling and prepare a small fire lay. Now it's up to you and put into practice what you've learnt to get your fires going.
Once your fire is established you must use your pot hanger to boil your filtered water and make it safe to drink.
Wild Game Preparation
For your evening meal our instructors will show you how to make bannock bread, prepare and cook fish and a wild game meat such as *pigeon/partridge/rabbit. After dinner the time is yours to relax and enjoy the woods.
*seasonal availability only one species will be used.
Day 2
Advanced Fire lighting - Bow Drill
After breakfast our instructors will show you various methods of fire starting which will include using Fat wood, how to make char cloth, how to use it with traditional flint and steels.
Channel your inner Neanderthal cave dweller like our distant ancestors by rubbing sticks together to create fire. Friction fire is the act of rubbing two sticks together to generate enough heat to ignite a tinder material. We will show you how to do it and then it's up to you.
Tree & plant identification forage walk
Before lunch we will take you for a short walk to discuss tree and plant identification. We'll collect any wild edibles available and collect ingredients for you to make your own 'bush teas'.
Lunch
Please bring your own food, snacks and drinks for the day.
Fresh water, tea & coffee will be available throughout the day.
Natural Navigation
In a survival situation if you don't have a compass you will have to improvise to estimate the cardinals and direction. Instructors will show you how to find direction using a shadow stick, a needle and a wrist watch.
Rescue Signals
Before you embark on any expedition you must consider how will you get help should an emergency arise. If you don't have any flares or communication equipment with you, our instructors will show you how to use the natural environment and the kit you carry with you to effect a rescue.
For your final 'Bushcraft & Survival Skills' activity, we will show you how to make a tripod smoke signal fire. Drawing upon all the skills you've learnt, fire lighting, knife and saw techniques, you will need to find suitable materials to make a signal fire.
Hopefully it works and you'll soon be on your way home. Good Luck.
